Parishes and Schools

The Office of Religious Education provides assistance to directors/coordinators of religious education in schools and parishes. It has established Sacramental Guidelines and Recommended Texts for catechetical programs and Sexuality Education. 

The office also oversees and administrates the Catechetical Certification process. It reviews catechist records, issues certificates, and develops ways to meet certification through planned inservice opportunities for parishes and schools.

This office also guides Sexuality Education by providing catechists and teachers with in-service opportunities and materials.

The Resource Library maintains samples of texts and accompanying catechetical materials to help parishes in selection of texts and materials. This library also maintains a variety of other books that are available for borrowing.

Adult Formation
The Office of Religious Education promotes and develops adult formation by offering a variety of options and opportunities for adult learners, assists parishes with methods and materials for adult learning, provides suggested lists, e.g., Scripture study programs.

In addition, the office liaisons with Loyola University to offer the Loyola Institute for Ministry Extension (LIMEX) in selected areas across the diocese.  This program offers the opportunity to earn a Master's degree or certificate in several areas right here in southern Missouri. The diocese also is in partnership with Dayton University, providing a reduced rate for online adult classes.  Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced level courses are available.

Resources and training for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, and Christian Initiation of children of catechetical age are provided by the Office of Worship and the Office of Religious Education. The latter provides inservice, texts, and catechetical assistance.

Safe Environment
This office coordinates Diocesan efforts to implement the 2002 USCCB Charter for Protection of Children and Youth. This includes Safe Environment Training and background screenings for all parish and diocesan employees as well as volunteers who have regular contact with children, record keeping, and audit preparation.

Other Responsibilities
Evangelization efforts are administered from the Office of Religious Education The office acts as director for national network USCCB and provides resources for parishes for variety of target groups active in this ministry.

As a Personnel Clearing House, the Office of Religious Education assists parishes in finding personnel for catechetical and pastoral positions. The office also assists applicants seeking catechetical or pastoral positions in the diocese.
